Juror’s Statement
The selections for the Perspective open call, bring together photographs that ask the viewer to consider, not simply what we see, but how we see it. There is a broad range of work, encompassing landscapes, interiors, architecture, objects, and portraits. None of these photographs are neutral, but approach perspective in both literal and metaphorical ways.
Some of the photographs transform familiar subjects into patterns and abstractions. Others translate the ordinary, and overlooked, into something strange. While some photographs appear observational, these are juxtaposed by those that are more ambiguous. Rather than photography being a neutral record of the world, these photographs illustrate that photography is very much authored. The mediation by the photographer compounds the outlook that there are multiple ways of seeing and understanding the world that we inhabit.
Perspective invites the viewer to look, and to discern each photograph. It elicits an active dialogue between photograph, photographer, and viewer. https://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/3408230?__r=146089
