TUITION | $335.00 per person plus shipping costs of all supplies shipped to and from your home
WORKSHOP SIZE | limited to 6

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION | Over the past eight years we have experimented with many methods and materials for the hand coloring of encaustic images. The creative potential for the enhancement and coloring of encaustic imagery is seemingly infinite. However, many of the methods, while interesting and effective, are not easily reproducible by the beginning or intermediate photo encaustic artist. The materials we have selected for this workshop have been proven to consistently achieve wonderful, repeatable results.

This will be a one day workshop (approximately 5 hours) in three sections:

  1. Starting with one of the instructor’s desaturated images we will begin coloring on the print with colored pencil and watercolor. Then apply wax to the image. Then texture with tacking iron if desired. Followed by a demonstration of the application of water-soluble wax crayon, egg tempera, pastel, and oils.
  2. Starting with a black and white image (the participant’s) we will add wax, then texture with tacking iron, etc. Followed by the application of pastel, oils and cold wax.
  3. Starting with gessoed board we will adhere tissue paper image (also the participant’s) to the board with wax, adding color to the image with pastel, cold wax and oils.
  4. If time allows the participants will work an additional one of their images using the above techniques.

Participants will have the option of continuing to work on their own images during the time between the workshop and the follow-up session.  The one-hour follow-up session will be a few days after the formal workshop.  Participants will have time to ask questions and show their work, completed or in progress.

The gallery will ship all the boards, prints, art supplies and equipment necessary for the workshop.  The student will ship back the art supplies and equipment after the followup session.  Participants are responsible for reimbursing the gallery for the shipping costs to and from their home/studio.  Shipping labels will be provided by the gallery.

As a prerequisite to this workshop, it is necessary that the participant has a working knowledge of how to apply wax to the images, fusing and the working of the surface of the wax.
