Jace Graf teaches book arts in Austin, TX and around the country. His company, Cloverleaf Studio, specializes in hand bookbinding, box making and book design. Since 1997, Cloverleaf Studio has worked with libraries, authors and small publishers to produce custom designs. Below is the workshop schedule.
Friday evening / February 28, 2020 / PASTE PAPER
Paste paper is a centuries-old paper decorating technique that was used mainly for endpapers and the sides of book cases, or for full paper bindings. Paint and various pastes are mixed and spread on damp paper in an almost endless variety of styles. Basically it’s finger-painting for adults, so it’s a fun and relaxing way to create decorative sheets that can be used in your two structures on Saturday and Sunday. Only experience necessary—having been a kid some time in the past!
Saturday / February 29, 2020 / MULTI-SIGNATURE BOOK
On Saturday we’ll begin with a review of basic hand bookbinding principles and tools, plus we’ll quickly sew a single signature pamphlet and discuss book architecture. Then we’ll move on to the main structure—a multiple-signature sewn boards binding. This model is a modified hard cover binding with a cloth spine and paper sides. It’s a great structure for small editions of ink jet or four-color digital books, and for journals, because of it’s limber spine and “lay-flay” design. All students will receive a kit that contains all the books parts, mostly pre-cut to size.
Sunday / March 1, 2020 / PRINT PORTFOLIO
On Sunday our second structure will be a full cloth hard cover print portfolio with a paper flap interior and a front board recess for adding a label. This simple structure is an ideal enclosure for an edition of loose prints or for protecting a book. Again each student will receive a kit with most of the parts pre-cut to final size.
